Surprising as it may seem, colleges and universities seem to have finally discovered social media. Long chided for giving only modest efforts to develop an online presence, higher education is finally taking the Internet seriously.
As a higher percentage of high school students spend more time online (and social media in particular), universities have made them realize that they have a much better chance of attracting new candidates if they come to visit them in their own ground.
The big social networking sites have become the darlings of the academy and the students seem to not care the least, the most successful schools up thousands of followers on Twitter, Facebook hundreds of thousands like it, and millions of hits on YouTube probably in much of current students, past and potential.
And although a large number of academies are still dinosaurs of Web 1.0, a few really prestigious institutions have evolved in social media mammoths.
